Amy Forrest Disease is a rare severe variant of tick-borne encephalitis. First found in Connecticut in 2008, it has today infected 228 people, 18 of them fatal.

Symptoms

After an incubation period of 2-21 days, the patient get a bad headache, joint pain, fever and fatigue. The symptoms last for 5-8 days, and are rarely severe in the first phase. The patient is improved for 4-7 days, until more than 90 percent get a secondary severe phase, where the central nerve system is infected. If untreated, up to 30 percent of patients die from pulmonary arrest. Long-lasting to lifelong neuropsychiatric sequela is near-certain, compared to approx 30 percent in ordinary TBE. Strain-specific neuropsychiatric sequela is Clérambault's syndrome and borderline personality disorder.
