Prelude

Goal

The goal with the Red Desolation is to cause massive death and civil unrest, which then can be exploited by the terrorists in order to bring forth their ideal totalitarian society, aka a "fourth reich".

Alternative terrorist attacks

Prior to the decision to chose the virus, other ways to inflict massive causalities was discussed. Discarded ideas included: toxic gas release (too few dead) and causing meltdown in a nuclear power plant (not as easy as depicted in some movies).

Involved people

Mike Hunt

A guy in his mid-20s with high-functioning autism. Hunt is a mathematical genius, and has developed algorithms that can create MD5 and SHA collisions with negligible computing power. He calls the set of algorithms as "the Nullifier". If his skills was publicly known, companies like Microsoft, Sun and Apple would fight over him and give him a huge salary.

However, the autism makes it difficult him to express his abilities. He don't even have an average paid job, in fact he is early retired. He works for small business in the Lindgren sphere, and while the job is quite fun, he doesn't earn more than the retirement pay. Hunt and his friends have struggled for a real employment, but they are regularly thwarted by the municipal disability support center, that wants to keep him in the early retirement trap.

The people behind the Red Desolation finds out about the Nullifier by intercepting e-mails. Mike do however realize that a public release of the Nullifier would create havoc, and he is very unwilling to give it out. He store it on strongly encrypted storages, and a brute force burglary would bring nothing. A robbery would trigger a panic attack, which would make it simple impossible for him to unscramble the data.

Hunt's economic situation can however be exploited. The terrorists use their influence in the municipality to keep Hunt in the early retirement trap. Finally, they offer him a large lump sum of money, and buy the Nullifier.

Marwan Hussein

Marwan is a street thug from Alby who left his criminal life. He is now doing back alley abortions for money. He charge as low as €10 for a falcon punch abortion.

Marwan got infected but survived without neurological damage. He used his medical skills to treat infected when the hospitals was overloaded. In fact, he actually saved the life of a victim of Carolina Wijnja Hemorrhagic Fever, by inserting a suction tube in his lungs to suck away the fluids from his pulmonary edema. Cytokine storms in the lungs is a common way to die with that syndrome, among those who don't bleed to death the first seven days. He got something around a teaspoon of the awful biotoxic pus, while the rest of the fluids did escape thanks to the siphon.

Human Abortion Virus (HAV) is an endemic disease in a communist controlled region in Latin America. This is classified as a relatively mild virus, which symptoms that resemble Winter Vomiting Disease. It is however a miscarriage agent, with 100 percent miscarriage rate in the first trimester. Maternal mortality rate is lower than Falcon Punch, but higher than skillful use of cloth hangers.

The release

Virus is released from a canister masqueraded as an attache bag in a luxury dance club in Spandex Plaza. Nobody notices it. Even if they can link the first wave of infected to the area, the first symptoms might be confused with severe food poisoning.

Food poisoning

The first symptoms of the disease is similar to severe food poisoning. With the experience of deliberate Campylobacter infection in served food, the main theories suggest this bacteria or Salmonella. The theory is abandoned when people start to die.

Paraquat and arsenic

Stolen canisters of paraquat, a potential lethal herbicide are found.

When the death count exceed 20 and hemorrhagic manifestations are reported, it is suspected that arsenic - the classic lust murder poison - is used.

Epidemic

Identification

The virus is identified as Wijnja Carolina. As key members in the administration either fall prey to the disease, stay home to avoid infection or are unable to continue their work because of public mistrust, the administration collapse.

Cyber warfare

A blogger post information about infected areas, and encourage his visitors to contribute with sightings. The rate of new infection do actually start to decrease.

The blogger is assassinated by terrorists. The terrorists do also hire spammers to poison his web site. A few brave internet users attempt to run similar blogs, but their voices are silenced in similar ways. In addition to that, a computer virus based on the Nullifier code is released.

The virus goes wild and the hope of containing the disease in a few districts is gone. Disease is spotted in new districts, and its just a matter of time before it will spread countrywide.

Curfews are enacted and public gatherings are banned, but most experts agree that the measures will just slow the spread at best.

Courage

A politician in the opposition stands up and tell the people that they need to "dare to share", and that we need "not a city of lemmings, but a city of bloggers". If a critical mass of active bloggers have courage to share information, the terrorists might not be able to silence everyone.

Political implications

The government attempts to calm down the national scare of a spread outside the city. They claim that "the situation is under control", but no one buys it.
