Siberian encephalitis is caused by Wijnja Siberia, a tick-borne virus.

Resistance

Virus has great cold resistance, but poor resistance to heat and moisture. However, individual particles tend to mutate with a result of sacrificing cold resistance for resistance to heat and moisture. Although the mutations, the other properties of the virus remain the same. The mutation capability makes the virus more resilient to climate variations.

Environmental mutation

If the virus is allowed to completely mutate into a strain with full heat and moisture resistance, it's called Wijnja Carolina. This virus has exactly the same symptoms as the original strain, but can transmit from human to human much easier. An outbreak of Wijnja Carolina is a national health emergency. It is unclear if this virus can be endemic in ticks in warm climates.

Cross-family mutation

A human host who was infected with tick-borne encephalitis and the wijnja virus at the same time acted as a mixing vessel. Genes from the wijnja virus jumped over to the TBE virus, which created a more lethal strain of the TBE virus - the Siberian subtype.
